The best love stories of all time

In no alphabetical or chronological order, these are my selection of the best love stories all year round and they are my all time favorites. Some of these movies are worth watching again and it never fails to evoke emotion in me after all these years. Others are just plain cozy and hugely entertaining with a dose of humour thrown in and they make a perfect choice for lazing around on sunday afternoon if I'm not shopping at the malls or visiting the in-laws and relatives or doing spring cleaning in the house.

this movie has a sequel but I really like the 1st one better. a story about a singleton who's loving every minute of her single life and has a major crush on her publisher boss, played perfectly by hugh grant and later with the humans right lawyer, the gentlemanly looking colin firth. I don't know what is it but there's something about british men - perfect gentlemen no?

this romantic movie is about a girl named maggie who has cold feet many times before her exchanging vows ceremony that she had dumped 3 men at the altar and as a result, getting tabloid fame and dubbed the runaway bride by the local community. after some factual errors a reporter made on her life story and getting fired for it, he decided to visit the small town and write an in-depth articles about maggie in a bid to get back his job. what he finds there is not only the love of his life but also a girl who's actually afraid to explore her own feelings and emotions hence the many cold feets. will she repeat the same act with this reporter?

the movie that somehow inspired my blog title has meg ryan having her life turned upside down after listening to a radio talk show one night of a boy who desperately wants his father to remarry after his mother died. A touching story of how one woman's determination to find out more about this boy and his father forced her to make drastic actions in the course of her life.

I like this movie. although adam sandler can be a wee bit too annoying with his wearisome jokes and all too familiar routines, he is more than makes up for this one. his tirelessly ingenious plans of wooing drew barrymore to get her to fall in love with him over and over again for countless times due to her permanent memory loss after a horrible accident (she only has memories before the incident) is undoubtedly the best original moments so far. match him with drew barrymore and rob schneider of the deuce bigalow: male gigolo sleepy hit, you'll get 11/2 hours of loaded fun!

banking on the popularity of internet in the mid 90's, this movie is about meg ryan, an owner of a quaint bookstore who has a cyberchat friendship with an internet friend while being engaged to someone, without knowing the internet friend is also her arch rival because his giant plush bookstore had overtaken her bookstore's clients forcing her to close down hers. I also know a friend of mine got hitched this way...and I'm happy to report that they are blissAlign Centerfully married!

the latest love story that recently entered my list of all time favorites. any movie that has keanu reeves and sandra bullock in it is a MUST SEE! this movie has a bit of supernatural element to it, nevertheless it is a sweet love story. about a doctor (sandra) who falls in love with a guy (keanu) from the past and their ways of communicating with each other is thru letters in the postbox. fenin already? nevermind, just go watch the movie and enjoy it!

I never knew drew barrymore can be so goofy and cutesy at the same time. it's about this geeky reporter named josie who has never had a boyfriend in her entire adolescence life hence the title never been kissed. opportunity comes knocking on her door when she was given the chance to live up to the glamorous high school life she never gets and becomes the ultimate prom queen.

can a man and a woman have the best of pure platonic friendship without the love-sex thing? yes, if your male buddy is gay and no, if he's as hottie as dermot mulroney and already has a rich girlfriend like cameron diaz. in this movie, julia is the bad girl trying desperately to win back her best friend's love from his fiancee. julia can play any bad girl roles she wants to but she still is the same pretty woman with a big heart in this movie. and I luv the scene where they merrily sang the song, say a little prayer for me....

julie andrews is very much the queen of musical movies. it is a tad too long for any hollywood movie standard (3 hours plus much like any hindustani/tamil movies are known to be) but it is a great classic and purely wonderful love story about a nun being sent to the von trapp's family as the children's governess. ohh..the songs are beautifully written and evergreen.

this is a simple lovable story about an ogre named shrek who lives in the swamp all by himself until he met loud mouth donkey, hysterically played by eddie murphy and their quest to find princess fiona locked up in the tower far far away. a charming children's movie that is. this movie has spawned 2 sequels due to its overwhelming appeal and a 3rd one is coming soon this year. my children and I love the 1st and 2nd movie. can hardly wait for the 3rd sequel. will it be as good as the 1st two?

set in the 1940's after WW2 ended, this story is about a soldier coming home and on his way home, he met this beautiful girl on a train who was impregnated by her lover and abandoned. she was afraid her father would kill her if he knew that there was no husband and out of sheer pity, keanu agreed to pose as her husband for a few days until she find courage to tell her father the truth. an indeed beautiful love story equipped with beautiful cinematography.

One of the best love stories of our time, it tells the story of rose, a young tormented girl trapped in a loveless soon-to-be arranged marriage to a wealthy man by her shrewd mother, who contemplates suicide in ending her miserable life until she was rescued by an ordinary chap named jack. who can ever forget the haunting love song, my heart will go on by celine dion?

forrest's undying love for his best friend since childhood, jenny never fades even though she has broken his heart many times. being a true simpleton that he is, forrest's earnest sincerity and selflessness has touched many hearts he met along the way. a great performance by tom hanks and no wonder he won best actor award for this role. I can watch this movie again and again and not feel bored one bit.

a rather charming story about a spinster (barbara) who accepted her fate as being so unattractive and plain that no man will ever look at her twice until she met the clumsy good looking professor played by jeff bridges. Barbara is excellent for playing the quintessential bacholerette happy with her singlehood-dom and minding her own business. I really like the ending song - I finally found someone sung by barbara herself and bryan adams.

another heartwarming love story about love at second sight. check here for more details on the story.

this is the movie that made julia roberts so famous and eventually bought her ticket to stardom. something like a cinderella story albeit with a contemporary twist. julia was a 1st time hooker looking to make some fast bucks when she met the dashingly handsome rich yuppie, richard gere driving his ferrari one fateful night and got lost in the street. the soundtracks are great and catchy.

definitely one of the greatest love story ever made to the screen. About molly who had lost her fiancee to a robbery gone awry and how sam's ghost was trying all his might to tell her that her life is in danger. I remember watching this movie with my girlfriends and we had a good cry towards the end of the movie. not only us, almost half of the audience cried mostly women. but I think whoopi goldberg was the star here and she stole most of the scenes with her crazy hilarious antics and no surprise, she bagged an award for her supporting role in this movie.

So which love story is your all time favorite?

Shaddup please!

Sometimes when you voice out your opinions or talk too much crap it could land you in a big spot. Not everyone will take on lightly with things you have to say on certain matters that deemed too sensitive to even discuss it freely with an open mind. I have learned not to take things too seriously and not let some bad judgements affect me so much.

Sometimes it's better and wiser to just keep your big mouth shut and just go with the flow like everyone else.

I'm thinking of getting a theme day to commemorate my silenceness. I call it a wordless day. And starting today onwards, I've decided to choose friday for my wordless day.

May the silence be with you, Luke!

Signs you are entering pre-menopausal age

There was an episode some years ago on Oprah Winfrey showing how pre-menopausal syndrome exist in every women without us knowing what's actually hitting. There was even a book penned by a woman author who also happens to be a medical doctor carefully explaining the term and its symptoms. Pre-menopausal basically means having to do with the time before the onset of the big dreaded M! That particular episode was a hit with the audience mainly women and Oprah was so happy to announce that she didn't have heart attack as she had thought earlier on after knowing the facts of pre-menopausal symptoms. If you are a woman in your 30's to 40's it can happen so beware of the early symptoms.

Maybe I am in denial with my age but my body doesn't. So let's go through this checklist of what's been eating me lately. By my own definition these are supposedly signs I am entering into the labyrinth of another world called pre-menopause.
  • Forgetfulness - I have been forgetting stuffs I put aside and find extreme difficulty in searching it. I have to jot down messages/or details on pieces of paper and stick 'em on the fridge.
  • Grey hair - lots of it and I am seriously mulling with the idea of dyeing my hair platinum blonde like Anita Sarawak or Rosnah Johari. That would look cool and gives me another 5 years younger.
  • Back pain - which is why I seldom dukung my son more than 10 minutes cause it's killing my back or he's just getting heavier and heavier like a gunny sack of 20kg rice.
  • Poor vision - I think I need to have reading glasses for I can't see the fine printable lines less that 1 feet distance. I have to extend my arms straight to be able to read those. And it's bad enough cause I am also shortsighted...sigh!
  • Tiredness - I get tired easily after doing some house chores and needed to rest for a few minutes before continuing. I would look like a dead chicken slumped on the sofa after a hard day's work.
  • Young men and women old enough to be your kid sister or brother calling you makcik. Ehh..I don't really look that old pal!
  • When I get honked or flashed for driving too slow and careful. Hey...there are children in the car you moron! See lah the sign that says it.
  • Too many of 'not tonight dear coz I'm having a migraine' signs posted on my forehead when my husband came back from work with that grin look of his on every thursday night.
  • My music knowledge ended somewhere in the early millennium when I stop listening to the radio (unless if I'm in a car) and I have no idea who the current top singer is. Was it still the elegant datin CT on top of the malay song charts? or the tone deaf Mawi? or the effervescent Adibah Noor? Not to mention my eardrums hurt a lot too from blaring sounds of music played regularly in shopping malls.
  • I noticed that I fit in well in the company of fine mature ladies talking just about any subjects that deemed suitable for our age group and beyond and couldn't grasp some of the slangs youngsters used today in their daily sms chit chat with each other. (just tune in to channel @stro15, you'll get what I mean)
I supposed I could go on but I'm running out of list perhaps needing more time to pause and reflect. If you are one of those women who falls into the same category as I did, feel free to add more.

Something to ponder on

These are some of the harsh reality pictures captured on some parts of Johor that was struck with flood on the second time around. Twice heavily flooded in less than a month (is it?) is definitely not good. There must be something wrong somewhere. There were so many theories as to why it happened in the first place. One of them is even predicted some 3-4 years ago. Hmm...

Looking at those pictures, one can understand the toll it has taken on the Johoreans and why politicians should make it a BIG fuss instead of focusing on the Visit Malaysia 2007 promotional tourism. It seems that our media has also played down the news on the catastrophe that befallen our fellow Malaysians in that regional part. Maybe it will scare the tourists away, I presume?

It is heartening to note that some of our fellow bloggers and residential communities have chipped in some donations in the form of clothings, basic essential items and monetary support to the thousands of Johorean affected by the massive flood. There are too many of them to mention here but whoever or wherever you are, you are all heroes!

Stir crazy

and he likes to wear my shoes

Little Bee, my youngest son is totally different from his two sisters in terms of baby achievements, if that is what I can tell about him. For one, he's a late talker but he is also an early walker. At barely 10 months old, he took his first giant step and there was no stopping him since. He has eventually progressed to climbing and scaling the stairs (much to my horror), the door grille, the kitchen countertop with an aid of a stool conveniently stacked under the kitchen sink, all of which he had greatly accomplished before his first birthday. A great milestone for a little rugrat in the house.

He is also a big eater and I am thankful that he is not picky with his food. It is so easy to 'suap' him anything that we adults eat - be it sweet, sour, salty or even bitter like makjun. He wants to try everything and if he doesn't like what it tastes, he just shake his head off and walk away.

He also likes to play hide and seek with me. There's one time I caught him in the act climbing onto the washing machine (mine was a front-loading type) with his body half inside the machine. God, help me!

For all the achievements any baby could have, he has yet to utter a single word that us adults could understand. He babbles and mumbles to himself with that baby talk of his. He speaks german alright. He hasn't quite know how to say the word mama to me but I am not complaining just yet.

And just so today, as I was doing some chores, I thought I heard him say the word wow! and he said it correctly. I observed that everytime he sees something colorful on the tv screen, he would say the word many times with his innocent mesmerised look. Such a bombastic word for a 16 months old's vocabulary, don't you think?

Real women have dreams

America Ferrera in her role as Ugly Betty

Jennifer Hudson on the right

So the recent 2006 golden globe awards had finally revealed its latest winners in its glittering ceremony held in Los Angeles last night. Whilst I am not into reporting who's who is winning here, I just would like to congratulate Ms Jennifer Hudson of the American Idol season 3 fame who won the best supporting role in the movie 'Dreamgirls' and also Ms America Ferrera (of the movie that made her famous - real women have curves) for her best actress lead role in TV series 'Ugly Betty'.

And I like how Jennifer delivered her honest acceptance speech beginning with...'I've always dreamed but never ever this big...'.

Who says big fat women don't have all the fun? Dream big, girls! Way to go, Idaho!

Who cares

I really like this cool shirt! Can somebody please tell me where to get one? I bet on my last ringgit that eons ago when you tell everybody that your favorite pastime is blogging, people would shake their head in disbelief and say, apa itu blogging? kao kerja baiki jamban sumbat ka? kesiannya kao, dah tak ada kerja lain kao nak buat ka?

In fact, someone had even dedicated this pantun 4 kerat in my honour (wink wink!)

Ada sorang ni
Tengah takde keja
Bangun pagi-pagi
Tak tau nak buat apa...

Need I say more?

Swell ideas!

The people who came up with these cool-looking gadgets made up from things mostly found in our home are truly creative smart people. Who could have thought of such things in the first place. Could you? MacGyver sure can!
